About me
I am a developmental psychologist. My area of expertise centers on understanding and influencing psychological health and well-being over time, and from a mindfulness-oriented, multicultural perspective. This work teaches us how our socio-emotional experiences are processes (not fixed characteristics), and how embodied socio-emotional skills can be learned, just like academic skills. These skills help us remember who we truly are. They continue to serve us whether we are in the midst of joy or suffering.
I work with diverse individuals and groups, as a trained mindfulness teacher, yoga teacher, and psychologist. Specifically, I offer mindfulness-based programs that provide support and training for (1) connecting with one's self and one's community - in safe learning spaces, (2) cultivating socio-emotional skills, and (3) navigating the demanding, fast-paced, and often lonely modern lives that pull us out of our embodied self-knowing. Broadly, I am committed to adapting and tailoring my therapeutic work to reach people where they are in the present moment. I am comfortable meeting difficulty and suffering as it arises.
I have been fortunate to have received rigorous training on the evolving influence of social media and technology on well-being. This has become one of my areas of therapeutic specialty. For people who are experiencing high levels of stress from technology, I offer support and empirically-based practices for the ethical and healthy use of technology. We face an unprecedented, urgent need to explore the influence of our screen-based tools on our everyday life. Evidence shows that behavioral change around our use of computers, phones, and tables, can have a profound and pervasive impact.
My educational background includes: Anthropology & Africana Studies (BA, 2008), Psychology (MA, 2015), Human Development and Family Studies (PHD, 2019). Previously, I worked as a writer and journalist in the public health sector, serving as a multicultural communications advisor in over 25 field offices in Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America.
